Capabilities Café and Catering
The Capabilities Café is a real life vision of that mission. In 1992, the Capabilities Café was established through a partnership between the Commissioners of Hamilton County. Capabilities Café is located in the lower level of the Hamilton County Judicial Building. Through this vital joint effort, individuals are prepared to interact with customers, handle food safely, stock vending machines, manage purchasing and inventory, prepare a variety of menu items and develop cash handling skills. The individuals served through this program collaborate with local area restaurants to expand the menu choices for the patrons of their establishment.
The catering function serves local community business for their unique needs such as, Hamilton County Leadership Academy, Master Gardeners of Hamilton County, and Noblesville Advisory Council of Disabilities.

Growing in Confidence
Kelsey Royal is one of the Capabilities Café’s rock stars! She started working at the café over five years ago.
Some of Kelsey’s first tasks at the café included stocking items such as chips, muffins, drinks, paper products, sanitizing tables, and customer service skills.
She eventually worked her way up to learning the cash register. Kelsey mastered entering customers’ orders, taking their payment, and always serving with a smile.
After Kelsey had been working at the café for a couple years, she wanted to challenge herself more. So, she started helping with the prep and assembling of food. Kelsey always takes her time when learning a new task and ensures it is done correctly. She also came up with a new item to put on the special’s menu - the meatball sub!
In 2021, the café started catering special events for Hamilton County Master Gardeners, Hamilton County Leadership Academy, and Noblesville Advisory Council on Disabilities, which has led to the biggest catering opportunity for the café, The United Way, coming up in August 2024.
Kelsey also worked on these catering events. She prepped food beforehand, helped transport the food, and then served the food during the events.
Kelsey’s confidence began to grow, and she started wanting a job outside of Janus. She connected with a job coach in our community employment program and started applying to different places. Kelsey now works at Goodwill 2 days a week while still attending Janus one day a week and working at the café.
